Respiratory System

After your first exam, we are now moving on to the Respiratory System. The next exam will only have three chapters on it (instead of 4 as this one did). Keep up on your reading and use these stories to link what we study in class with what we see in everyday life!

As if there weren't enough health concerns about daycare...

I once had this same problem - a doctor prescribed a full dose of antibiotics for viral pneumonia. It wiped out my natural gut flora, and I lived with colitis-instigated gastrointestinal problems for 10 years.

Well, this is a great idea, but unless he invents a jock that can do the same thing, guys are out of lock.

Blood (Nothing to do with Vampires)

Predicting unnatural or dangerous blood clots would be great - far better than after-the-fact treatment!

Ok, class, tomorrow in lab we are going to take blood samples and all use the same needles. Sound like a good idea - NO!!!!!! Common sense people.

Week 2 Stories

Hello A&P-ites,

Here are three stories that you may find interesting that relate to topics we will be covering this week.

A 101 year old woman has successful heart valve replacement surgery!!!!!!!!!

As a certified choc-o-holic, this is the kind of story I like to see!

Some perspective on the inter-connectedness of our body's major systems.

We may have to pick up the pace a little bit - I think I've been a bit too repetitive and too slow - I'm not talking about lighting speed without repetition, but I am going to cover a bit more in our allotted time from here on out.

Heart Anatomy and Heart Circulation

The first three lectures of this course will cover the circulatory system. Specifically, this week's lectures will cover heart anatomy and the heart's relationship to circulation. Here are some links to a few stories in the popular media that feature topics closely related to lecture this week.

These stories both have much to do with heart anatomy

A story about Babara Walters' heart surgeryhttp://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/health/2010/07/14/2010-07-14_barbara_walters_cowvalve_surgery_experts_reveal_whats_behind_it.html

Research suggesting that the heart may heal itself if properly 'encouraged'

All of these things have deep roots in the study of anatomy and physiology. Hopefully what you learn in this course will help you better understand the inner workings of the human body and provide a great reference when you see stories such as these in your day-to-day lives!

Welcome to Human A & P II

By way of introduction, I am Dr. Travis Wilcoxen and I am starting my first semester as a faculty member at Millikin University. I plan to use this blog on a week-by-week basis to provide additional information that is relevant to the lecture topics for the week. These items will include popular articles from websites, newspapers, or magazines that put the scientific topics into a popular perspective. Further, this will provide a forum for which students may discuss topics from class. Check back frequently for updates and I look forward to having you as a student!
